Reading this book together with a friend, (she has a different version then mine, I have this one), I discovered that my book was missing parts of the sentences. AWFUL!!! I was very disappointed with this edition. If you look at the page 196 chapter 16, half way through the page, a sentence that starts with "Y de golpe, con una desapasionada perfección, Earl Hines proponía la primera variación de I ain't got nobody, y hasta Pericio perdido en una lectura remota, alzaba la cabeza (Y SE QUEDABA ESCUCHANDO, LA MAGA HABÍA AQUIETADO LA CABEZA) contra el muslo de Gregorovius...All that part that I wrote in capital letters is missing in this version of the book. This edition should be REEDITED and not sold like this. IT RUINS THIS AMAZING WORK OF Cortázar.

Rayuela Spanish Edition Julio Cortazar 9781535105873 Books Reviews
Rayuela is the first truly experimental novel in Spanish, on the level of consideration that James Joyce's Ulysses receives in the English language. The English-language cover quotes a New York Times critic calling it "the best novel I have ever read." The first 56 chapters of the novel tell the story of Horacio Oliveira, an Argentine intellectual in Paris, his lover La Maga, the non-intellectual who makes him realize that what he is looking for is not to be found where he has thus far sought it, and later, in Buenos Aires, of Traveler and his wife Talita as well. It is quest fiction, complicated by the fact that the object of the quest is ill-defined as the "center," "heaven on the hopscotch," a "place" that in some way implies a fusion, a reconciliation of opposites, or, as the book puts it, where the opposite of "sanity" is not "madness." But what counts is less the story than the experience of Rayuela, which incudes an invitation to a second reading that alters the first. This is a book that I have given as a gift to a good number of people, and the usual response has been, "This book changed my life."
Certain chapters stand out as among the best I have read in any novel in any language and any time period (e.g., Chapters 22, 23 (the hilarious and poignant Berthe Trépat concert), 28, 36, 41, 54, and 56). My highest recommendation for this truly exceptionnal novel.
Rayuela is a book of books, not easily encapsulated in a genre even though is said to be a novel, be prepared to have your mind played with and your thoughts jumbled, but most of all, enjoy it and have fun with it! It's a book that transcends time and places. I read it from start to finish even though you can read it in many different ways by suggestions of the author, pick your own way and go for it!
I did not like this book at all. At the time it was written, speaking French was considered sophisticated. The book has entire paragraphs in French that I was unable to understand.
Rayuela is a book of questions and few answers that leaves a lot to the reader imagination and interpretation. It centers in the bohemian lifestyles of a group of men and women mostly foreigners living in Paris. The main character is Oliveria
from Argentina and his lover la maga from Uruguay. The writing is superb in Cortazar"s native Spanish, although hard to read at times unless you dominate both English and French due to frequent quotes in both languages.. Like its title Rayuela jumps in characters , situations scenes and even countries in a way that is dizzying and intimidating. Art, literature, philosophy, mythology and much more in every page, so this is not a light novel for summer reading at the beach.
I had to contact about this edition because is terribly edited, really bad spanish, more like if it would have been translated very poorly from another language but the original is in Spanish! Or if the copy was just the result of scanning the book badly ...thanks to I got a refund but this edition should be taken down!...I am not sure about the good reviews, but Spanish is my first lanngauge and this is a terrible edition of a great book!
This novel's reputation places it possibly beyond criticism. It is a long complex ambitious book on every level... It will exhaust but fascinate at the same time. I chose the second hopscotch reading, but missing one or two of the links, my reading became disoriented, repetitive, and out of any synch. I later discovered I had missed some of the book's best passages. My fault of inattention I accept... With hindsight I would read the book straight through. Or even miss out on the rambling chapters where you feel you are trapped in a locked room with heavily smoking refugees from the philosophically aimless and rambling culture and habits of 1950's Paris. There is very much that seems excessive, indulgent, and aleatory. There is very much that is very good indeed.
Reading this book together with a friend, (she has a different version then mine, I have this one), I discovered that my book was missing parts of the sentences. AWFUL!!! I was very disappointed with this edition.
